Group-ie Love: How to Get the Best Wedding Group Shots by Melanie Grizzel

After your wedding ceremony, everyone is so excited and all they want are a few minutes to shower the bride and groom with love. As I'm sure you've learned, you have limited time to get all of the group shots you need in between events. It takes a skilled people person to be able to rally the troops and get everyone organized while keeping everyone happy and smiling at the same time - I'm that girl. ;) Group shots are a tedious and we aim to make them fun, creative, quick and painless - below is the She-N-He method to the madness:

1. 30 days before your wedding we send out a questionnaire asking about timeline, must have photos and most important - your formal group shot list. We'll offer a comprehensive list of shot examples that couples have asked for in the past. We ask that our couples review the list and tailor it to their specific needs. You'll want to take your time with this. Ask your parents and other family members. Think about this list when you have time to give it some attention. Your wedding day is going to be fast and thrilling, you don't want to be racking your brain about who should have a group shot and forget anything.

2. Once we have your list we'll go over it with you. This insures that we don't have any redundancies and gives the bride and groom a chance to make any edits or additions necessary. You don't want to be like Hillary Swank when she won her first Oscar for Boys Don't Cry and forgot to thank her husband... that was a colossal mistake, she heard about it for months. Moral of the story - triple check and write it down.

3. Then, we organize. We make sure that grandparents are finished first so they can sit down and enjoy AC (or heat). If Aunt Becky needs to be at the reception venue, she'll be next. We make sure to prioritize each shot in a way that makes the most sense for your group.

Fun Fact:

While I'm shooting group shots, I notoriously forget names (what? there's a lot of y'all!). I make up light-hearted nicknames for everyone, which usually get a giggle or two, and we move forward. If at the end of the session guests are calling each other by their given nicknames - success!

The Bride’s Thoughts

"Our wedding was April 2, 2016 at Montesino Ranch in Wimberley, Texas. We had approximately 140 guests. We fell in love with Montesino when we first visited in 2015 when we started our wedding venue search. We wanted the style of the wedding to fit the venue and because Montesino itself is so beautiful very little decorations were needed. As far as wedding planning, our engagement was a little over a year. However, in that year I moved back from Seattle, we bought a house, I started a new job, and we started renovating the house. Needless to say, it was a busy year but we just chipped away at the wedding planning a little at a time and it all came together quite nicely at the end. The most important thing to both Eric and me was that we wanted it to be a fun weekend for all of our friends and family. I think we were both extremely calm on the day of the wedding because we had talked about how it didn't matter if we got off of our timeline or if some small detail went wrong. At the end of the day, we wanted it to be a laid back celebration and fun party." - Carolyn

The Details

Venue: Pearl Events +Ilios Lighting, Floral: Bouquets of Austin for bridal party flowers/pew markers + DIY table flowers/arrangements with wholesale flowers/vintage bottles from mother of the groom, DJ: Live Oak DJ, Catering: Dagars Marquee Rentals, Invitation design/printing by Native Factories.

The Bride's Thoughts

"I had a lot of time to plan the wedding (16 months) so I tried to really enjoy the process. I am very organized so I made myself a to do list and tried to complete one task per month (venue selection, caterer, dj etc.). I wanted the event to feel like family and have everyone we love feel included. We were able to incorporate skills that our friends/family already had  and involve them in the wedding. My uncle and Bonner's grandfather were our pastors. Bonner's mom helped find old glass bottles to make the table arrangements. My mom made the groom's tie, all of the pocket squares for the groomsmen and the usher's bow tie from fabric I picked out and shipped to her house. My Aunt has great handwriting and addressed all of our invitations. Bonner's screen print shop (Native Factories) designed and printed our invitations.  (They even had a drawing of our dog on them.)

My most cherished memory from the day was our first look. There were so many nerves associated with the day and it's expectations. It was such a relief once we could finally be together and get the party started." - Alex

She-N-He Top 3: Austin Wedding Venues by Melanie Grizzel

As photographers, a good venue makes us giddy! It sets the scene for a great event which, in turn, means great photos. We’ve been around a ton of weddings, so naturally we have favorites. Check out our top three favorite Austin wedding venues.

Barr Mansion

This space is so intriguing. It’s the first certified organic special-events facility - yes, the venue itself is organic. The floor-to-ceiling windows invite gorgeous natural light to flow in, allowing for beautiful photos. The natural elements throughout the venue highlight the thought and care that was put into creating such a space. Plus, it’s close to town which is always a positive for guests. And as pure as the venue, so is the staff. They’re a great set of people and lovely to work with.

Stonehouse Villa

This venue was destined for beauty, considering it was created by interior designers. The Villa is smack dab in the center of a plush green landscape right outside of Austin, in Driftwood, which allows for fantastic Hill Country views. The natural limestone house has so many intricacies which makes for a great back splash. Not only is the venue beautiful, so are those working within the space. Photographers are flies on the wall in many situations and the staff is always professional and caring in their duties.

Hummingbird House

Minimal decorating is needed at the Hummingbird House since the natural botanical setting has flowers and luscious greenery everywhere, Year round, they always have something blooming - Gorg! This is such a fun place to photograph because there are details waiting around every corner, its truly something out of a fairytale. I also can’t rave enough about the staff. They are SO gracious and accommodating to their couples.

There’s an obvious common thread in all of our picks (besides beauty) - a great staff. The staff is such an important component to consider when deciding on a venue. They will be providing support to you and your vendors throughout one of the most important days of your life. Be sure you mesh with the space as well as the people working in it.

Emily -N- Casey / A New Years Eve Prospect House Wedding in Austin, Tx by Melanie Grizzel

Emily -N- Casey A New Years Eve Prospect House Wedding in Austin, Tx

Our favorite memory from the wedding was seeing all of our loved ones have such a great time.  We wanted to throw a fun party and from what everyone has told us, we succeeded!  My happiest moments were both spending time in the bridal suite with my parents and best friends but also when I saw Casey for the first time.  It was such an emotional moment for me to see him and hug him for the first time on our wedding day.  Another favorite moment was seeing the ceremony space, the breezeway and the reception hall once all of the vendors had finished setting up.  It's challenging to envision what the space is going to look like while you are planning, but seeing all of the lighting and decor put in place was so much more beautiful than I ever could have imagined.
I think our 8 month engagement was the perfect amount of time to be able to plan everything but not feel like the planning went on forever.  The hardest part was locking down a location and a date as this town books up quickly!  We were really pleased to find the Prospect House, the owners are fantastic and it allowed us to have a more modern wedding in the hill country.  And having our wedding on New Year's Eve took it to another level of fun because everyone was in the spirit to celebrate and have a good time!  The wedding and reception go by in a blur, so our best advice is to take the time that night look around and soak it all in.
And of course hire a fantastic photographer that works her butt off to not miss a moment!

Brooke and Nick's rainy day Mercury Hall Wedding. Austin, Tx by Melanie Grizzel

2016-02-08_0002.jpg

Brooke and Nick rainy day Mercury Hall Wedding, Austin, Tx.

From Brooke:

Planning: The planning went well, I’m glad we gave ourselves a long engagement to think about things we wanted and to shop around. We did a good job sharing responsibilities, in fact I have to credit Nick with moving things along, I am really thankful that he wanted to be involved and help coordinate things. We’re both thankful for Rachelle, our 30-day coordinator at Mercury Hall. She did a great job answering our questions and helping us figure out last minute items, and on the day of the wedding it was such a relief knowing she was there to make it all run smoothly!

Favorite Memory: So many highlights come to mind, for both of us! For Nick, his highlights were seeing me for the first time in my dress, and giving his toast. For me, it was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Nick in front of me, and hearing all the loving remarks from my sister Kate, brother-in-law Peter, dad Rolfe, and of course Nick!

Wish you knew then: For Nick, the décor details are things you shouldn’t waste a lot of time or money on, most people don’t remember those things anyway. For me, I wish I hadn’t worried so much about how everyone was going to get along. Everyone there showed me so much love and support.

Thao -N- John / An Austin Wedding at the Hummingbird House by Melanie Grizzel

2015-07-06_0001.jpg

from Thao and John:

I suppose it was about the time I realized my wedding would be less of a Grace Kelly affair, and something a bit closer to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, when I started to really enjoy my day.  All the little, silly details start to blur into a vaseline lens view, and you realize all the things important.  That's when I was not only excited to marry my lifetime lover, but when I fell in love with my friends and family all over again.  My fondest memories of my wedding are seeing my friends and family gather in full force to help fold napkins while singing railroad songs, drive newly make-up'd bridal parties in un-air-conditioned minivans, aunts (well, one in particular) charging into the changing room just because she deserved to be there, uncles with cameras wielded more boisterously than the most seasoned paparazzi, cousins who were supposed to be guests instead transform into freelance wedding coordinators.  That's when you realize how much love surrounds you, that people you love so much are so willing to sacrifice time and distance away from their busy lives, Mother's day and birthdays put on hold, just to be with you and help you, to celebrate you and the love of your life.  And then, of course, there's my husband.  Who stood at the end of the aisle, crying like a newborn babe.  That was my absolute favorite part of the wedding--seeing that one person you want to be with most on this Earth, wanting the very same thing.  It brings me to tears again just thinking of our wonderful vows.  There were butterflies.  Not like in Disney movies, but real live butterflies floating in the air as we uttered lifelong promises to each other in front of those friends and family we hold dearly.  The wedding day was a blur, but the bits and pieces that I keep are some of the most valuable I have, and I will treasure them for as long as we both shall live.

2015-07-06_0002.jpg 2015-07-06_0003.jpg 2015-07-06_0006.jpg 2015-07-06_0004.jpg 2015-07-06_0008.jpg 2015-07-06_0005.jpg 2015-07-06_0015.jpg 2015-07-06_0007.jpg 2015-07-06_0017.jpg 2015-07-06_0016.jpg 2015-07-06_0019.jpg 2015-07-06_0030.jpg 2015-07-06_0028.jpg 2015-07-06_0018.jpg 2015-07-06_0013.jpg 2015-07-06_0011.jpg 2015-07-06_0012.jpg 2015-07-06_0014.jpg 2015-07-06_0032.jpg

Thao says:

Oh how do I count the ways?! Mel can do no wrong in my eyes.  While still awaiting my wedding pictures, I have NO RESERVATIONS about recommending her over and over and over again (and in fact, already spread her gospel amongst my newly engaged friends).  Why?  Because she is talent incarnate.  And a lot of fun.  But her talent and fun are only icing on a massive, moist cake of professionalism.  Her work is absolutely incredible--our engagement pictures were fun, unique, and vibrant with life and love.  She was flexible, yet inspired throughout, and took our ideas and made it her own.  I LOVED our engagement pictures and the three wedding shots I've seen--especially because I was a bit camera-shy with some self-doubt.  She made it all go away with a few camera flashes, and has the uncanny ability of seeing (and capturing) the beauty in anyone, regardless of how long she's known you.  She's willing to try new ideas and methods, yet experienced enough to know what looks best.  She is reliable, timely and responsive.  She guides without being overbearing--hell, she even talked me down during my one bridezilla moment when the family was pulling me here and there during family photo time in a cathedral veil under the Texan sun (think Hatfields and McCoys, except both factions come from my side of the family).  She is truly a gem--while everyone else makes you feel like you're just another bride-cog in the wedding-machine, Mel actually made me feel beautiful on the most important day to feel beautiful.  And for that memory and keepsake?  I'm forever grateful...

Katherine -N- Robbie / Green Pastures wedding photography in Austin, Tx by Melanie Grizzel

Katherine -N- Robbie at Green Pastures

from Katherine:
Leading up to my wedding, I was very focused on whether this or that aspect would look beautiful. Planning a wedding has that affect on most people. How can you not focus on the appearance after you have looked through thousands of wedding photos, you have picked your accessories, your dress, your nails, your hair, your flowers, your wedding stationary, and you have choreographed your first dance. But, the day of, all that mattered to me was how it felt walk down the aisle with my mother and father, hold my husband’s hands during the ceremony, read my vows, dance for the first time as husband and wife, laugh with my friends and family, and celebrate with my community. Now that the wedding is over, I am excited to see how everything looked, but I am so much more excited to see our photos so that I can relive the moments captured by them.
I am so grateful for all of the vendors we worked with. They all did a fantastic job. What I think made our experience exceptional with our vendors is that we chose people and companies whose taste and products we loved and respected. It was freeing to know we could trust their taste and not feel the need to micromanage our vendors.

Katie and Greg's rainy day wedding at Green Pastures.

My fondest memory day of was how smoothly everything went, the food, and  the entertainment- we love Encore and they didn't disappoint! Also the butterflys!! We were so lucky with the weather and above all the whole event was so fun and we really got to enjoy it! The ceremony was better than I could have ever imagined or planned and the floral decorations turned out amazing!
Planning was a breeze because every one of our vendors was so easy to work with, which was such a blessing since we were planning it all from out of town!

Erica -N- Alan / Chapel Dulcinea Wedding Photography / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

"...at the end of the day you are married, and the wedding was perfect!"

From the Bride - I remember the afternoon of the wedding pulling up to the venue and having to hide under my sister’s pashmina because guests were walking right by the car. Of course my uncle saw me and started laughing and pointing me out to other guests! Finally once we were in line to walk into the chapel, the musicians began playing the most beautiful rendition of “Concerning Hobbits” from the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack and I finally felt excited instead of just ready to get it over with. Fast forward to the reception, I was happy to see my new husband and guests having a great time. While there were plenty of hiccups in the planning process, both Alan and I had a great time with all the different people in our lives coming together and celebrating. Seeing my 80-something year old Grandma jamming to our ragtag bluegrass band was pretty heartwarming, too :) I feel like I should add a disclaimer here: I feel like there is a lot of pressure on brides to orchestrate the most perfect and flawless day. My advice is to let it go. Flowers will get knocked over, people will get drunk, someone might still be hung up on your pink wedding dress and non-diamond engagement ring and will choose your reception to remind you of this, and you may get stuck in your Spanx and nearly have to cut it off at the hotel that night, but if at the end of the day you are married, the wedding was perfect!

From the Groom - Once "Concerning Hobbits" started playing I almost choked up. Luckily both of us maintained composure through the whole ceremony (I'm an ugly crier). It was just so exciting to take my new wife's hand and walk down the aisle together after ringing the chapel bell. After Mel took some shots of the party, family and us newlyweds, we headed back to the Barn for the reception. Our families and friends did an amazing job of decorating-- my grandpa even made custom etched pine centerpieces for all of the tables. Once we arrived for the reception it moved incredibly fast. Damon, my best man, and Thomas, our mutual friend who introduced us, both had great speeches which doubled as passable stand up routines. Our friends from school also brought fiddles, guitars, banjos and mandolins for some live music out on the patio. Probably the most memorable moment of the night was when they had Erica and I to join them on the washboard and wash-tub bass for an impromptu jam session.

Thanks to all of these wonderful Austin Wedding Vendors

What we wanted was a special day to celebrate with our friends that fully matched our personalities and would leave our friends and family thinking "Yep, that's exactly what I would have pictured for Angela and Greg."  We wanted it to be personal more than perfect, so we just planned with that in mind, without trying to compete with elaborate Pinterest ideas, other weddings we'd been to, or flawless wedding blog posts. We had an extremely talented friend do the ceremony music, we had a cookie cake (complete with the Cookie Monster song during the cake cutting) along with Amy's Ice Cream, we had Buc-ee as our cake topper (who in Texas doesn't love Buc-ees?), we had fajitas for dinner, and we had our dog as the ring bearer.  The most memorable parts of the day for me were the flower girl (my niece) going back to the aisle mid-ceremony to pick up the flowers she had dropped along the aisle on the way in and my dad's toast at the beginning of the reception (had people crying, then laughing, the crying again).  The best advice I have for a couple planning their wedding is to not get wrapped up in the planning and everyone else's ideas and expectations for the event. Don't let anyone convince you that you care more about a certain aspect than you actually do (I promise no one even remembers that didn't go with fancy china at the wedding).  Just think about the two of you as a couple, plan your day to enjoy it, and remember that it's the life ahead of you that's the most important part!

Joyce -N- Joshua / Hacienda del Lago Wedding Photography / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

From Joyce and Joshua:

From the moment we got engaged, there was one thing we were certain of: the wedding had to be simple and it had to be laid back, just like our style.  Yes, there were certain elements we had to have, but at the same time it would be completely representative of our unique, easy-going personalities.  We chose the stunning outdoor location at Hacienda Del Lago and secured Suellen at Everything's Possible to coordinate.  Over the next year, we decided on the essentials and selected Fresh Off The Truck food truck to cater, the super-excellent Mel from She-n-He Photography, JR Digital Video to record thoughtful video of the entire day and Marquee Linens to provide simple, yet elegant linens.  Eric from Penguin Entertainment kept the party going with his great music selections and ability to read the crowd.

In the end, everything turned out better than we could have hoped for.  We're extremely happy we chose the vendors we did, because they were able to tailor everything to match our styles and made sure the day embodied us completely.  We couldn't have done it without them.  The only thing I would have done differently is I wouldn't have stressed over the decorations as much; because when the day was over, everyone was there to have a good time and not critique the decor.

Andrea -N- Dylan / Umlauf Sculpture Garden Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Andrea -N- Dylan an April wedding Umlauf Sculpture Garden in Austin Texas. from Andrea: Our wedding was amazing! The whole day went as planned thanks to our amazing vendors, family, wedding party, and especially my mom, who was invaluable from start to finish, I couldn't have done it without her! Planning the event was super easy with Jessica Brightwell at Pearl Events. She was there every step of the way with awesome tips, schedules, and checklists. She-n-He made photo sessions a breeze with their laid back attitude, funny sense of humor, and great appreciation for highlighting personality in photos. Word of Mouth catering exceeded my expectations with their super helpful staff and delicious food.

For me, one of my favorite aspects of our wedding was the atmosphere and tone for our special day. It was important for us to create a fun filled atmosphere in a space that friends and family would be comfortable. Carrie at Flora Fetish transformed Umlauf Sculpture Gardens into an electrifying, fun, "vintage with a twist" venue that entertained our guests to no end! With her help, we were able to highlight our personalities with games, quirky accents, and style.
The only thing I would change is to spend less time on the dance floor and a little more time to allow myself to sit back and take it all in. Time flew by and I know there were many aspects of the wedding that I missed!
Our wedding day was the best day of my life. Even though the day went by faster than I can believe, I'll never forget how very fortunate I am to have had so many great people, family, and supporters who helped create such an amazing day.

Ashley -N- Jeremy / Stonehouse Villas Wedding / Driftwood Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Ashley -N- Jeeremy

from Ashley:
While trying to be the laid back, under controlling, collected "bridezilla!" It was important to us that we got everything we hoped for! The idea for the wedding was for it to act as our first family reunion with all of our Best friends of course!! We strived to do everything out if the box! When we first saw Stonehouse Villa we knew it would be the perfect place for everyone to forget about everything and let loose. Christina was incredible. She was always on top of my multiple ( and I mean MULTIPLE) emails. All of our vendors were nothing short of amazing. Kassie from Catering with a Twist certainly made sure the food wasn't your typical wedding menu, but a plate of spicy Mexican food! Jason from Altared weddings made sure that someone's foot was tapping to the music from beginning to end. Jason Freshly our wonderful coordinator was my best friend for 48 hours.
Then there's Melanie from She-n-He photography. I've already decided that we are best friends. When Jeremy and I met her, she was perfect. Her enthusiasm made me that much more excited. We gave her no restrictions.  It's strange, for a year or so, we had these great ideas for certain photos, but as it got closer and everything started to happen we lost them.  Yet, all it took was a cup of coffee (or three!) with Melanie and she just understood us.  She knew what we were looking for just by hearing us chit-chat.  it was effortless.
You spend all this time wondering how this possibly is going to work out. The worry, the anxiety, the stress, all of that goes away when you see each other.
